In addition to the fantastic monuments, gastronomy and welcoming atmosphere of Évora, you can also watch birds
Birdwatching can be done in virtually any location, certainly one of the reasons why it has become so popular.
Within the city limits or around them, we can be surprised by unique species. When visiting the Cathedral of Évora, don't miss the opportunity to observe the western jackdaw or the black redstart.
During spring and summer you can observe the swifts that fly over the city streets at great speed. These summer species arrive in the region at the beginning of March and will use the cavities in buildings to nest. It is possible to observe two species with very similar characteristics – the Black Swift and the Pallid Swift.
Swallows are also represented and it won't be difficult to find the common house martin, one of the five species that can be seen in the region.
Visiting the city's Public Garden will increase the range of species observed. Here you can find, for example, the Eurasian blue tit or the short-toed treecreeper, species from more forested habitats.
So far, 76 species have been registered in this garden, according to the platform eBird.
Venture beyond the city limits and explore the Alentejo landscape, you will certainly have a good experience. Corn bunting, Black and Red kite, black-winged kite, Spoonbill, Zitting cisticola, Sardinian warbler or Iberian grey shrike are some of the species that can be observed thanks to the diversity of habitats around the city . In spring it is still possible to hear the characteristic call of Little Bustard, a species in sharp decline in Portugal.
Two observatories for bird watching were recently installed in the Divor reservoir, so a visit to this place could be worth it. These two structures are aimed at observing water birds.
